What it is

The AI Generalist is the orchestrator. They apply AI across functions — strategy, delivery, operations, communication — rather than burying themselves in a single specialism.

The value is not narrow expertise. It is judgement at the seams between disciplines, where most organisations have none. They direct the work, interpret the output, and decide what to trust.

It is the broadest title on this page, and increasingly the most senior. As agents absorb mid-level specialist tasks, the premium shifts to people who can see the whole board and move across it.

Demand reflects that. Gartner put year-on-year growth in generalist roles at 42% in 2025; a US average around £72k masks a long upper tail for those who tie breadth to outcomes.

What you'd do

  • Spot where AI belongs in a workflow, and where it does not
  • Quality-check and override model output with domain judgement
  • Translate AI decisions for stakeholders who don't speak the technology
  • Lead cross-functional adoption rather than single-tool experiments
